Smokeless fuels (no longer called coal) are a type of solid fuel which emit minimal amounts during combustion then burn clean.  They are a replacement for coal, which produces excessive smoke and is now banned in England.  Supplied in the form of standard pillow-shaped briquettes or ovoids.  They contain a mix of combustible materials such as anthracite and coke, and a binder to form the ovoid shape.  (read more on wikipedia).
